Grasswhistle Geared Up by CaineScroll Grasswhistle Geared Up by CaineScroll
Something I did to kill time. And by time I mean almost an entire day. But meh, details.

This time I designed an outfit for :iconrenaturnip:'s OC, Grasswhistle. I kinda fell in love with her after seeing *SoulSpade's rendition of her, and by *ahem* coincidence I needed a couple of ponies to model for me anyway. So I was like "why not?" and went with it.

To be honest, I'm not even sure what genre I'm aiming for anymore; it seems like a big mashup of styles. The biggest difficulty encountered while designing this was the colouring process; it was hard to come up with a good colour scheme, and adding black only simplified the process instead of thoroughly solving it. I have to admit I'm a little embarrassed at that. :blushes:

That's all folks! I'll be in my turnip-proof bomb shelter if y'all need me. :meow:

PS: It's probably obvious enough, but the three sub-lenses on the goggles are a nod to Corvo's spyglass in Dishonored. I can't finish one picture without putting a reference somewhere in there, sob~

That is a very, very good design and color scheme for a pony to begin with, and you really showed her off with your pose and costume design here. Needless to say I love the goggles, but I also really like the knots in the metal accents on her outfit, and the wings on her hind legs. Phenomenal!

I'm glad you like the design, as well as those goggles (no points for originality though)! As for the wings on her boots, there's actually a dA emoticon that looks pretty similar to it :damphyr:...thank you nonetheless! =D

Awww this is so incredibly cute... what a lovely picture, and such a fabulously sweet gesture on your part; Rena certainly is entirely deserving of such a kind gift! Despite the fact that I'm not usually very into OC ponies as you know, I do think Grasswhistle is a very well-designed character, and certainly you have done a great job with her here. The outfit does suit her somehow, and once again I love the attention to detail throughout; the goggles in particular came out very well in this picture in my own opinion. Lovely dear, and kudos to you for being such a thoughtful friend! :aww:

Haha, Rena's a real quackjob alright (in a totally adorable way :meow:), and it was really fun to draw Grasswhistle for her! I really liked how the clothes turned out in this picture; not really fantasy-orientated, but I suppose it gets the job done. Thanks for stopping by! ^_^

I did think of Dishonored, Norse mythology, steampunk and maybeee a bit of Kingdom Hearts, but surprisingly no Final Fantasy. I appreciate the compliments, though, thanks! =)

... And now for a more coherent post on the subject.

She's amazing :o You picked an expression and a pose that I think really suit her, first and foremost, which I think makes the whole thing better. And I never, never, ever thought I'd ever see Grasswhistle in this kind of outfit... and I approve xD I am very impressed that you made it work on her. Even with her usual flower it all still goes together. The bracelet and the collar I especially like... and you did so well on her mane and tail as well. And black is an excellent catch-all colour and that is why I use it in all my art always. I'm lazy!

And seriously I'm really a sucker for any design that even remotely looks like Nomura put his hands on it, so naturally I'm gushing all over this.

<3~

And now for MY coherent reply. ;P

Honestly, Nomura was never on my mind when I made this picture. Not even once. The main reason I even decided to work on Grasswhistle was because she is no doubt the most beautiful OC pony I have ever seen (I might even make Scrolls go gaga for her if I'm not careful :meow:). I Googled "steampunk" and got several references, with the end result looking...not very steampunk. ^^; I'll admit that the flower is actually metallic in this rendition, though...and the bracelet and the collar look pretty Norse to me now that I look back at it.

That aside, I'm glad you like it, and I wub you too~! :huggle:

You know, I do feel a little silly having said that now... but I will stick to "even remotely looks like" and use that as an acceptable truth :P I do recognize that she's more steampunk than anything, though, so.

But... but... ;_____; The most beautiful? Really? That's ridiculous and you are too kind. That is surely a huge exaggeration and nothing further D: *buries herself from further praise and hides Grasswhistle from peering Scrollses* Also, I did notice that the flower was different, and it makes sense as a mechanical decoration rather than a natural one... it fits~ As do her bracelet and collar. It all works, really, and I love her so much. So ridiculously much. You have no idea :glomp: Thanks so much for doing this, you. It really made my day and it inspired me to do art I was happy with too.

This looks pretty solid as steampunk/art deco to me. The black makes it look classy, although this is a neat tool if you get stuck: [link] If you do a triad with the base as Grasswhistle's coat color, you actually get the flower color you used as a complement (the other color is purple, which if darkened might work nicely here).

I likes it, in any case.

Grasswhistle is a mighty fine OC design, and this is a lovely portrait of her! I always like the steampunk look, so any outfit with goggles works for me... especially complex goggles. Love the little wings on her boots, and she's got a nifty collar design. Great work on the colors as well... love the slightest hint of blush you gave her. Nicely done!
